What it does: Online payment solutions, payment gateway service, sensitive data storage and e-commerce payment platforms.

Best known for: Omise is a Thailand-based online payment solutions provider that also operates in Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Staff stats: Around 180 employees.

The good bits: Omise allows some employees to work from home or elsewhere with company-sponsored MacBooks.

The not so good bits: Applicants should expect several rounds of interviews that can prolong the hiring process. The company may require up to four interviews for candidates.

The Omise story

Omise established their business in 2013 as an online payment solutions provider. They started with a payment gateway service in Thailand in 2015 and Japan in 2016. The company further expanded its services in 2017 by launching Alipay and an internet banking option in Thailand. Omise claims a 1,000 per cent growth in transactions between 2015 and 2016, partly because of their operational expansion.

Part of the business development included more than 400 merchant signups, on average, in different countries. The company has employed more than 130 individuals for their Bangkok headquarters and regional offices in Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. A majority of them work as design, engineering, marketing, product and sales experts.

The recruitment process

Most people apply online for job opportunities at Omise, but the company’s vacancies tend to be concentrated in Japan and Thailand. The hiring process is quite straightforward: the hiring team reviews applications followed by three to four interviews with different employees at Omise.

Japan

The company doesn’t seem to recruit students for internships. Job vacancies like HR and finance officers usually require several years of experience.

Thailand

The average recruitment process can last two to five weeks depending on the role. Some of the previous applicants said that Omise seems to have a disorganised approach to screening candidates.

Career prospects

Omise doesn’t require experience for entry-level roles at their Bangkok head office. These jobs include content writers, customer support specialists, junior QA engineers and KYC associate analysts. Content writers at the company usually have a bachelor’s degree in communications or marketing. They should be fluent in English and Thai.

Fresh graduates can apply as customer support specialists only if they are fluent in English and Japanese. The company prefers to hire individuals with a finance or IT degree. Aspiring junior QA engineers will have a greater chance of being hired if they have at least two years of experience in software testing, a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or IT, and business-level skills in English.

Graduates of economics and finance can also apply as KYC associate analysts, who must have a professional level in English and Thai. The company will be more inclined to hire candidates with at least one year of experience in financial compliance (eg AML and KYC).

Remuneration

Software developers at Omise earn between THB61,000 and THB66,000 per month on average. There’s limited information about the salary structure for other roles in Thailand and other regional offices.

The company, however, said that they offer above-market salaries, discounts at partner stores, flexible working hours, free snacks, healthcare plans, MacBooks and stock options. Some employees can also work from their homes, and they said that Omise provides 15 days of vacation leave that can accrue to up to 30 days.

The culture

The company describes its employees as ‘Omisians’. Most people are friendly based on the experience of current and previous employees. The trade-off for an informal work environment involves a slow career progression, despite having no tight competition for senior roles.

Employees also take ownership of their work, which stems from the practice of giving autonomy to company staff members. You also won’t need to splurge on clothes because of the company’s casual dress code. Graduates will likely fit in well at Omise if they prefer an open-office layout where people collaborate frequently.

The competition

Omise’s top competitors include 2C2P, Razer Merchant Services RDP. Founded in 2003, 2C2P started its business in Singapore. They focus on the application software industry and have 130 more employees than Omise. 2C2P also has more overseas operations with regional offices in Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Thailand.

Razer Merchant Services started in Malaysia as MOLPay in 2005. Most of their services focus on the internet software industry. RDP began to operate in Singapore’s systems software industry in 2011. These three companies generate more revenue than Omise.

The vibe of the place

Graduates should pursue a job opportunity at Omise if they love the idea of working outside a traditional office. You should take note that not everyone can choose to work remotely. The company also doesn’t have a defined career path for graduates, and it’s uncertain if they offer internship programs too.
