What it does: An investment holding company that manufactures, supplies, and distributes cement-building materials, petrochemical products, and packaging solutions to various regions around the world

Best known for: Siam Cement Group (SCG) is Thailand's oldest and largest producer of construction materials. In 2016, this century-old manufacturing company was ranked as Thailand's second-largest company while being the #1 company Thai students want to work for. SCG was founded to establish the first cement plant in Bangkok, Thailand, according to the royal decree of King Rama VI in 1913.

Staff stats: 52,971 as of 2018.

The good bits: An above-industry-average pay with multiple fringe benefits, work-life balance and job security. The company puts a premium on employee physical and mental health through sports and exercise activities, a mental development club, and a fitness centre.

The not-so-good bits: As one of Thailand's biggest conglomerates, SCG suffers from the common afflictions of big companies (eg slow decision-making process, non-integrated systems that stunt workflow). Insiders often complain about slow promotions and difficulty climbing up the career ladder.

The Siam Cement Group story

In 1913, a royal decree by His Majesty King Rama VI tasked SCG with producing cement for the increasing number of infrastructure projects in Thailand. The spike in construction projects aimed to accelerate the country's economic development. The Crown Property Bureau controls a 30% stake in the company, the largest among all shareholders. Kan Trakulhoon, who filled various managerial posts in the cement, ceramics, and chemical sectors, became SCG's CEO in 2006.

Since then, the company has diversified into three core businesses: cement-building materials, packaging solutions, and chemicals. The company heavily invests in Southeast Asian regions including a petrochemical complex in Vietnam, packaging businesses in Malaysia, and cement plants in various regions.

Today, the company is aiming to expand abroad with most investments earmarked for projects outside of the country. Four cement plants are poised to be developed in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Kan plans on raising the Siam Cement global workforce outside of Thailand to almost 50% up from 2015's ratio of 30%.

SCG's segments produce a wide variety of industrial supplies and construction materials. The cement-building materials segment manufactures and sells white and grey cement, ready-mixed concrete, roof tiles, dry mortar, ceramic tiles, sanitary fittings and wares, and concrete paving blocks, among others. The chemicals segment manufactures and sells polyolefins, olefins, and various other chemical products. The packaging segment produces kraft paper, corrugated boxes, printing, pulp, and writing paper, and gypsum line board.

SCG has made joint ventures with several internationally renowned companies including Toyota Motor, Yamato Kogyo, Kubota, Siam Mitsui, Michelin, Nippon Steel, and Dow Chemical Company, among others.

The recruitment process

Siam Cement Group is divided into four departments: sales & marketing, engineering, digital and IT, and communications and branding. The recruitment process varies from role to role, but graduates may expect to attend a series of one-on-one or panel interviews with a hiring committee and/or department managers. Some roles require aptitude tests and technical tests. Note that several positions in SCG are grade-sensitive (GPA of 2.70 or over for undergraduates and 3.30 for post-graduates). The process may take up to two weeks.

Remuneration

SCG offers an above-industry-average pay with a range of fringe benefits that may include health insurance, paid sick and vacation leave, performance and annual bonuses, travel expenses, and maternity and paternity leave. Post-graduate scholarships may also be granted annually at both master's degree and doctorate levels.

The culture

Employee well-being is integral to the work culture of SCG, and several benefits and initiatives are set in place to uphold this (eg running clubs, a well-equipped gym, and a mental development club). Numerous fringe benefits may be extended to family members from employment to retirement, while post-graduate scholarships and various training programs are open to employees aiming to learn more.

Social contributions

SCG has given back to the community through numerous activities. The company's corporate social responsibility initiatives focus on lifting the community's quality of life, generating steady household income, reduce expenses, and building immunity to deal with changing circumstances.

SCG's CSR activities are divided into two components: the CSR Committee for Sustainable Development offers policy and direction to allow the company to optimise the use of capability and resources while determining critical social issues, while the SCG Foundation implements various social activities. Hand in hand, both segments have worked to implement several campaigns that protect the environment, foster education, and encourage volunteering, among others.

The vibe of the place

Graduates looking for polished credentials will easily be drawn towards working for SCG – a prestigious conglomerate that is one of Thailand’s best companies to work for.  While remuneration, work-life balance, and welcoming office are the company’s main draws, one should expect workplace difficulties common to industry giants and challenges climbing up the career ladder.
